Thirty One Days of Blogging - Day Four
I attended college at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and I have also been a life-long Nebraska football fan. I didn’t get to attend many games in a cruel twist of fate as I had to work weekends. For most of my college years, I could sell my football ticket, but there was one season we almost had to give it away. I also witnessed more losses than wins, and that streak has lasted until this season. It is a good thing that I can’t attend any games, but this still hasn’t been a good season. I graduated in December 1981 and promptly was job hunting in the 1982 recession.
I can remember thinking if I could only get $1000 each month, I will have it made! Now I was still lucky to have my full-time job from college at the bowling center. I ended up moving back to Omaha in 1984 without a job due to a family matter. Through connections, I started to work at Mutual of Omaha in November 1984. I spent ten years in Individual Health Claims and ten years in Individual Policyowner Services.
At the time, I was using Business Analysis and Project Management skills and techniques. I didn’t think of it that way because they were not formal titles in that era. Yet when you make exceptions to policies, negotiate discounts on large dollar claims, advise analysts on elevated cases and resolve other issues, it seems so obvious now. My next post will be about how I became a Business Analyst. I hope all of you have a great Friday and an even better weekend! Enjoy every minute as life is too short to do it any other way. Remember, the glass is always at least half full!
