Thirty-One Days of Blogging - Day 29

Today’s blog continues with my Top Ten. Today I reveal Numbers Five and Six. Number Six is I Got to Speak at BBC. BBC- Building Business Capability is the official conference of IIBA. To be selected for the first time was one of my “bucket” list items. As the months went by, I did alter my presentation to fit a virtual format. I was pleased with how the presentation went, especially for being virtual. During that presentation, I discovered some things about the conferencing software that helped some of my buddies speak the day after me. The one thing that would have improved the virtual experience is if I could visually see the participants. The visual clues are key to gauging how your presentation is being received. My hope is to be selected to speak in the future when it is in person. Until that time, I do think my bucket list item has an asterisk behind it.

Number Five is My Inner Circle of Friends. I am fortunate to have a great inner circle of friends. Almost 100% of them do not live anywhere close to me. I guess I am too much to handle on a full-time basis. When you are a solopreneur, you talk to yourself every day. I am good at doing things on my own, but I have relented and asked for help with things this year. This has been hard because I am usually the problem solver. Most of my circle of close friends are not BA’s, so they can’t help with the technical details. They have been supportive in many other ways.

The best thing about a few of them who are BA’s is that they tell me what I need to know, not what I want to hear. They have been very supportive both as I was making my retirement decision and navigated this first year of my business. These people will always be there for me, and that is priceless. My family has also been supportive, but none have a project or business analysis background. My husband is another one of my biggest supporters. He does follow my blogs but does not always understand all the technical parts. It is tough to describe in a short elevator pitch what a BA does. Tomorrow I will reveal Numbers Three and Four. Until then, please keep your glass at least half full.
