The Most Important Things a Young or New BA Needs to Do
As I continue with my advice targeted toward new and young BAs, I need to explain that experienced BAs could use this as a reminder. Every BA should build their brand even if employed in a company. It is ten times more important if you are self-employed. I am known as a great mentor, storyteller, and leader. I was allowed to do this when I was in corporate America. I stepped up as a leader without asking, and I never got in trouble for it.
A few things a new or young BA should do as they start their careers. They should network, network, network. They should attend formal network events and use social media. LinkedIn is the must-have platform, and they should post regularly to start a following. They must observe other BAs or similar professionals and ask their followers to connect.
Anyone who knows me can guess which organization they should join. IIBA- International Institute of Business Analysis. This was the best thing I ever did as a BA. I could go on for hours about all the membership benefits - 11,000 books in the online library, certification, Knowledge Hub, BABOK®, and so much more. You will have numerous networking opportunities, especially by joining your local IIBA Chapter. Volunteer for that chapter, and you will learn leadership.
The one thing I didn’t expect was the number of friends I made, and some of the close friends are more like family. Volunteering with my local chapter and Global IIBA was one of the best things I ever did. New and young BAs should also take their ECBA test as soon as they have their PD hours.
