First Lesson for a New Business Analyst

I know I missed Monday’s blog. A few different things got in the way. I resolve to do better. I also will stop the contests as people didn’t submit any guesses. I am also going to start talking about business analysis and other related topics. I have blogged enough about myself.

The first lesson that I always teach new BA’s is that 85% of what they do involves soft skills. More specifically, communicating with people. If a person is not a skilled communicator, they can’t succeed as a BA. I am not discounting any hard BA skills, but building models, templates, or other tools is easier to learn.

When I say communication, I am referring to both verbal and written. The additional skill that wraps into that is the BA also needs to be a good listener. The more abstract thing to teach is how to make people feel when you are communicating with them. I will not talk anymore about this as I am still creating the packages I will be offering through my business, so I can’t give away everything.

I mentioned the contests at the beginning. My favorite sport is bowling, and I was a decent bowler for 40 years. I do commit to having other contests in the future, but I will structure them better. Being a solopreneur, I have learned many lessons over the last year. You try many different things before you find the winning formula. Until next time, please keep your glass at least half full.
